International Yoga Day

International Day of Yoga ( अंतर्राष्ट्रीय योग दिवस):  commonly and unofficially referred to as Yoga Day, is celebrated annually on 21 June since its inception in 2015. An international day for yoga was declared unanimously by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 11 December 2014.Yoga is a physical, mental, and/or spiritual practice attributed mostly to India. The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his UN address suggested the date of 21 June, as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and shares special significance in many parts of the world.

Origin-

The idea of an International Day of Yoga was first proposed by Narendra Modi during his speech at the UNGA, on 27 September 2014. He stated:

Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help in well being. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day.

Following this initial proposal, the UNGA held informal consultations on the draft resolution entitled "International Day of Yoga", on 14 October 2014. The consultations were convened by the delegation of India.

योग का इतिहास | History of Yoga in Hindi

योग दस हजार (10,000) वर्ष से भी अधिक पुराना है। मननशील परंपरा का सबसे तरौताजा उल्लेख, नासदीय सूक्त में, सबसे पुराने जीवन्त साहित्य ऋग्वेद में पाया जाता है। यह हमें फिर से सिन्धु-सरस्वती सभ्यता के दर्शन कराता है। ठीक उसी सभ्यता से, पशुपति मुहर (सिक्का) पर योग मुद्रा में विराजमान एक आकृति है। वह उस प्राचीन काल में  योग की व्यापकता की पुष्टि करता है। हालांकि, बाद में योग का हिस्सा बनने वाले प्रथाओं/अभ्यास का सबसे पुराना उल्लेख, प्राचीनतम उपनिषद- बृहदअरण्यक में मिलता है। प्राणायाम के अभ्यास का  इसके एक स्तवन (वेद मंत्र) में मिलता है और प्रत्याहार का उल्लेख भी छांदोग्य उपनिषद में मिलता है। "योग" के बारे में जैसा कि आज हम इसको जानते है उसी अर्थ में, पहली बार उल्लेख शायद कठोपनिषद में आता है । यह एक मुख्य और महत्वपूर्ण उपनिषद, यजुर्वेद की कथाशाखा के अंतिम आठ वर्गों में पहली बार सन्निहित होता है। योग को यहाँ भीतर (अन्तर्मन) की यात्रा या चेतना को विकसित करने की एक प्रक्रिया के रूप में देखा जाता है।

"योग याज्ञवल्क्य" का प्रसिद्ध संवाद (जो बृहदअरण्यक उपनिषद में पाया जाता है), ऋषि याज्ञवल्क्य और शिष्य ब्रह्मवादी गार्गी के बीच हुआ। इसमें कई साँस लेने के तकनीके, शारीरिक स्वास्थ्य के आसन और ध्यान का उल्लेख है। गार्गी द्वारा छांदोग्य उपनिषद में भी योगासन के बारे में बात की गई है।

अथर्ववेद में उल्लेखित संन्यासियों के एक समूह - "व्रात्य"- द्वारा, शारीरिक आसन को अधिक महत्व दिया गया है और हो सकता हे की वही आगे चलकर  योगासन के रूप में विकसित हुए। यहाँ तक कि संहिताओं में भी कठोर शारीरिक आचरण, ध्यान व तपस्या का अभ्यास करनेवाले कई मुनियों, महात्माओं, व्रात्यों का और विभिन्न प्राचीन साधु और संतों का उल्लेख किया गया है।

योग धीरे-धीरे एक अवधारणा के रूप में उभरा है और भगवद गीता व महाभारत के शांतिपर्व में योग का विस्तृत उल्लेख मिलता है।

बीस से भी अधिक उपनिषद और योग वशिष्ठ उपलब्ध हैं, जिनमें महाभारत और भगवद गीता से भी पहले से ही, उस सर्वोच्च चेतना के साथ मन का मिलन होने को ही योग कहा गया है ।
